With the rise of Communism began the Serbs' estrangement from God and a lengthy period of violence, as son rose against father and brother against brother – or, as one of our contemporary Fathers put it, a time of deicide, patricide and fratricide. Then, in the early 1990s, a spiritual reawakening among the younger generations of Serbs began to take place. Quite suddenly and unexpectedly, burning questions about the meaning and purpose of life began to form in their minds as their despair gave birth to a new life. This new life demanded a truthful answer and an equally truthful fulfillment. And as in the days of old, when our people struggled under the Turkish yoke, it was the Orthodox monastics who had the deepest knowledge of the human heart and infinite love and understanding for the suffering of their wayward flock. They were the only ones who could provide an answer to all their questions. And so it came to pass that those who searched for Love and those who preached Love recognized one another. Sophrony, one of the most beloved orthodox Christian elders of our times, revealed to the world his own experience of union with God, and the path to that union. drawing near to God with intense love and longing accompanied by struggle, self-emptying and searing repentance, Fr. Sophrony was granted to participate in the life of God Himself through His uncreated Energies. Like orthodox saints throughout the centuries, he experienced God’s grace as an ineffable, uncreated Light. It was in this Light that Christ was transfigured on Mount Tabor before His Apostles, and it is in this Light that we shall see Him as He is (I John 3:2).

Born into a Russian orthodox family in Moscow in 1896, Archimandrite Sophrony embarked on a successful career as a painter in Paris. There he delved into Eastern religions for a time, before repenting bitterly of this and returning to the faith of his childhood. After a brief period of theological study in Paris, he left for the ancient orthodox monastic republic of Mount Athos in Greece, where he spent fifteen years in a monastery and a further seven as a hermit “in the desert.” on Mount Athos he became the spiritual son of a simple monk of holy life, Elder Silouan. It was under the guidance of Elder Silouan that Fr. Sophrony experienced divine illumination, knowing God intimately as Personal Absolute—as the one Who revealed Himself to the Prophet Moses as “I AM” and Who became incarnate as man in Jesus Christ. In 1959, Fr. Sophrony founded the Monastic Community of St. John the Baptist in Essex, England, which has since become a major orthodox spiritual center for all of Western Europe. His books on the life and teaching of his elder, Fr. Silouan—published most recently in a single volume, as Saint Silouan the Athonite—led to the canonization of Elder Silouan by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the orthodox Church in 1988. Born in the seventh century and raised in Damascus, he died at his monastery, Mar Saba, near Jerusalem. He wrote works expounding the Christian faith and composed hymns which are still used. He is one of the most widely read Fathers in the Orthodox Christian tradition and is best known for his strong defense of icons. Considered by many to be the final and crowning work of the patristic age, St John of Damascus ' " On the Orthodox Faith addresses all the major areas of Christian belief: Trinitarian theology, Christology, soteriology, the sacraments, the veneration of icons, saints, and relics, and much more. This diglot edition, reproducing the critical Greek text on the facing page, is sure to become the standard and classic edition of this central and important patristic work. Critique: A critically important and core addition to Orthodox Christian theology and history studies lists, " On the Orthodox Faith " is an essential and unreservedly recommended addition to church, seminary, and academic library collections. And yet, as the modern reader is confronted with his words, it becomes apparent that he, too, is being addressed; Chrysostom's words are words proclaiming the truth of the Gospel to all people of all times. In these sermons of St John Chrysostom we find an important corrective to this view. Although himself a monk, Chrysostom had a profound understanding of the needs of his congregation. Inspired by the epistles to the Corinthians and Ephesians, he discusses the reasons God instituted marriage--primarily to promote holiness of the husband and wife, and only secondarily to produce children. Chrysostom goes on to discuss sexual relations, the mutual responsibilities of marriage, and parenting. While parts of Chrysostom's sermons may seem limited to his own time, the vast majority of his advice has timeless relevance for the Christian family.

Translated by Catharine P. In this fine Christian poetry, the author expresses his awareness of the sacramental character of the created world, and of the potential of everything in it to act as a witness and pointer to the Creator. God's two witnesses, says Ephrem, are, "Nature, through man's use of it, [and] Scripture, through his reading it." In his writing, Ephrem posits an inherent link between the material and spiritual worlds.

St. Ephrem's mode of theological discussion is essentially Biblical and Semitic in character. He uses types and symbols to express meanings or relations, to reveal something that is otherwise hidden, particularly in expressing the connections between the Old Testament and the New, between this world and the heavenly, between the New Testament and the sacraments, and between the sacraments and the end of the world. Because his theology is not tied to a particular cultural or philosophical background, but operates by means of imagery and symbolism basic to all human experience, the theological vision expressed in his hymns has a freshness and immediacy even today.

About the Author: Sebastian Brock is a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford, and University Lecturer in Aramaic and Syriac.

Reviews:

Hymns on Paradise

Posted by Susan Ashbrook Harvey, Sobornost on 10th Jun 2020

Occasionally there comes a book which is a gift to scholars and lay people alike. In this short piece, Maximus discusses many diverse themes, including God's relation to the cosmos, monastic discipline and life, scriptural difficulties, and his vision of the consummated universe in relation to the incarnate Word of God. The work is arranged into two hundred “chapters,” which are often pithy pearls of wisdom coming from the respected figure of an elder or abbot.
