Saint Joseph the Hesychast: Letters and Poems

This book in your hands, containing the letters of St. Joseph the Hesychast, will hopefully respond in some manner to the request made by the former Associate Professor and now Professor of Emeritus of the Theological School of the University of Athens, Mr. Nicholas Nicholaidis. At the Panorthodox University Conference "Elder Joseph the Hesychast - The Holy Mountain - A Philokalic Experience," he said: "By all means, the subject of 'The Writings of Elder Joseph the Hesychast' needs study, reexamining, and much research. This is why I consider it appropriate to suggest now - without devaluing the existing work painstakingly published by the Holy Mountain of Philotheou - that perhaps a new effort of discovering and publishing all the letters of the Elder should or rather must be undertaken...The holy Elder advised, guided, and consoled many of his spiritual children through his letters: layman, people who wanted to become monastics, monks, nuns, relative of his who were leaning toward monasticism because of the family tradition, clergymen, etc.
