Stories Not in the Bible: Apocryphal Books from the Orthodox Tradition

Item No. 9781968863128

by Nicholas Roumas

Stories Not in the Bible collects seven sacred books that were passed down by Orthodox scribes for almost 2000 years, before they were forgotten in modern times. Here we encounter stories such as Adam and Eve's struggle to survive outside Paradise, Enoch’s journeys to the heavenly realm, and Christ’s descent into the underworld. The stories are part of the Orthodox Tradition, and are told again in this book for the Orthodox lay reader, translated from the original languages and introduced by Orthodox theologian and psaltis Nicholas Roumas. These seven stories will delight, fascinate, and disturb readers with their fairy-tale-like narrative power, bold theological reflections, and wild views on human life.

About the Author: Nicholas Roumas is an Orthodox theologian, psaltis, and composer of liturgical music. His books include The Musical Ark, Redemption: A Mimetic Soteriology, and a translation of the Psalter. He is a native and resident of Massachusetts and teaches theology at Hellenic College.

Praise for Stories Not in the Bible

"In Stories Not in the Bible, Nicholas Roumas makes available to English speakers readable versions of a number of important ancient texts. The themes and elements of these texts shed new light on the biblical text itself and on the Church’s tradition of interpretation of those texts. While many of these texts have been available before, this presentation, aimed at the general reader, is both accessible and accurate, making this book a unique opportunity for study." -Fr. Stephen De Young
